(Hoang ‘Leon’ Nguyen / The Republican) Big Y will open two new Connecticut World Class Market locations — at 656 New Haven Avenue in Derby and 150 Boston Post Road in Milford — on Thursday, Nov. 7, the Springfield-based chain announced Monday. The supermarket chain said it began construction on both the 55,060-square-foot Milford market and 59,502-square-foot Derby location in January. Big Y hired 135 new employees in Milford and 90 employees in Derby. “All of us at Big Y are excited to offer these communities a brand-new shopping experience and a new option for their grocery and lifestyle needs,” said Big Y president and chief operating officer Charles L. D’Amour in a statement. “We know that our customers will appreciate the selection and quality of our fresh and local foods and the variety and value that our new stores have to offer.” Big Y said the markets boast innovations both inside and outside of the stores. Both have eat-in cafés, full service floral departments, butchers , seafood department, deli, bakery and beer departments. Big Y said the new locations offer electric vehicle charging stations in the parking lot; LED lighting in the refrigerated cases and throughout the store saving energy; full store building management system optimizing equipment and refrigeration operations; and, composting and single stream recycling programs. Another new feature in each store is six self-scan registers to speed up the checkout process for customers, according to the release. As part of the Grand Opening celebrations, Big Y Foods, Inc. will be donating $1,000.00 to the Connecticut Food Bank which the company supports daily with food donations for those in need. Big Y Foods Inc operates 83 locations throughout Massachusetts and Connecticut including 71 supermarkets, Fresh Acres Market, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors and 10 Big Y Express gas and convenience locations with almost 12,000 employees.
