The flower grower is offering $5 grab-and-go bouquets, as a result of a lack of market for the product due to COVID-19. – Mac Christie/Torstar Unable to sell their flowers through their regular channels due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Flamborough’s Cedar Field Greenhouses is offering $5 bouquets for roadside pickup at their 10th Concession East property — and Flamborough residents have taken to the idea. The east Flamborough operation grows chrysanthemums and alstroemeria to be sold as cut flowers, mostly at florists and grocery stores around GTA — and the flowers take 12 weeks to grow, meaning crops coming off now were in the ground in early January. Due to the quantity of flowers that would otherwise go to waste, owner Rene Juraschka said they decided to make up some bouquets and reach out to the community on social media. Customers can come to the 439 10th Concession property from Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. to pick up flowers — and leave cash or e-transfer money — while practicing physical distancing. "We thought, ‘It’s a shame to throw all those out,’” he said of the flowers. “The support from the local community has been quite overwhelming. “I’ve been very moved by it.” Juraschka said bouquets were a good way to use the unsold flower stock — and to brighten up people’s homes who are self-isolating.
